Before I get started I would just like to mention that I was quite surprised to see visitors from all over the world took a peek at yesterdays entry! Thank you so much for reading! :)
In today's post I would like to share some of the goodies I've made in the past. The ones that got me started, and that taught me the lessons I've used with every cake, cupcake and cookie that I've made since.
Before I add any images, I would just like to mention that each cake I'm adding here is my first attempt at that style of cake, hence the many, many flaws. :)
This cake is the first time I ever used Fondant:
It was for my Mums 50th surprise birthday, and with that cake, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Defining moment if you will. It was before I knew to steam cakes, or even how to cover cakes! There were so many wrinkles and tears but I was proud of it, my first ever decorated cake. :)
My Second ever cake was slightly smoother.. But I think that was luck more than anything!
Ahh.. This is still one of my favorite cakes that I've made. It was for the Nurses at the Hospital who looked after my very premature nephew and he was due home on boxing day, so my sister asked me to make a cake to thank them. This was the result. I'm not ashamed to say I have little Barney Stinson "Self high five" moments, this was one of them :)
My third cake was commissioned by my Aunty. She wanted to help me learn and the next person to have a birthday was getting a cake from me. It happened to be my cousin, and this is what he received:
I'm fairly certain this cake could single handedly give an entire family diabetes. Two tiers of chocolate cake filled with chocolate ganache, covered in chocolate ganache and piped with chocolate ganache and a little white vanilla butter cream, you know, just to break it up. I have since learned better ways to use ganache, and endeavor not to subject any more of my family members to death-by-chocolate ganache again.
Since making these cakes, I have picked up new skills, and I can definitely say I have learned valuable lessons from the cakes above, but without them, I wouldn't be where I am now. I Didn't know how to pipe at all, how to cover cakes, how to colour fondant without it being a giant glob of stickyness, or how to manage my time so that i wasn't up till 2am the day before delivery to get it done.
Just to prove I really did learn something, tomorrows post will have a few more recent cakes, and for my fellow beginners, some other bloggers and YouTube channels I highly recommend for picking up skills (and wasting hours of your time watching others work on flawless creations, like I did! )
